Life’s busy. And the idea of spending months—or even years—in therapy can feel daunting, especially if you’re already feeling worn out.

Trauma-focused therapy intensives are here to offer a different approach: they’re designed to dive deep, save you time, and get you real results quickly. And now, they’re more flexible than ever—with options for virtual sessions, in-person appointments in Portland, or a calming experience in your private home garden space.

What Is a Trauma-Focused Therapy Intensive?

If you’ve heard of therapy intensives but aren’t sure what they actually involve, you’re not alone! Trauma-focused therapy intensives are extended therapy sessions (typically between 3-4 hours total) designed to help you make meaningful progress in a shorter amount of time. Instead of waiting week after week for progress, an intensive allows us to work deeply with fewer interruptions, creating a foundation for long-lasting change.

Unlike traditional weekly therapy, which usually lasts around 50 minutes, trauma-focused intensives are designed to give us the space to process and explore on a deeper level, reducing the need for multiple sessions on a weekly basis.

Why Choose a Therapy Intensive?

(Hint: It Saves You Time)

Let’s face it—everyone’s busy. Trauma-focused therapy intensives offer the chance to commit to healing without feeling tied down by weekly appointments for months. Here’s how it saves time and energy:

    • Efficiency: In a 2 to 4 hour intensive, we can cover more ground in one sitting, focusing on specific issues without interruptions.

    • Deeper Processing: The extended time allows your brain to really engage in trauma reprocessing, which can often feel disjointed in shorter sessions.

    • Flexibility: It’s easier to schedule one longer session than commit to weekly appointments if you have a full schedule.

    What Does Trauma-Focused Mean?

Trauma-focused therapy is specifically designed to address and heal trauma. Trauma isn’t just stored in our thoughts—it’s stored in the brain and body. Trauma-focused modalities target the areas where trauma is “stuck” so that you can release it without the retraumatizing experience of retelling your story over and over again with no effect.

Here are some of the modalities that can be incorporated into a trauma-focused therapy intensive:

    • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART): ART works with the brain’s natural healing ability to reprocess traumatic memories without needing to talk through every detail. ART uses eye movements to shift how memories are stored in the brain, allowing relief from painful images and sensations.

    • EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is another evidence-based approach for trauma. EMDR also uses eye movements to help the brain process traumatic memories so they no longer hold the same emotional charge.

    • Brainspotting: This technique involves using eye positioning to access trauma stored in deeper parts of the brain. Brainspotting allows clients to process trauma in a way that feels both targeted and gentle.

Each of these therapies is designed to work with the brain’s limbic system (the part responsible for emotions and memory) rather than just the prefrontal cortex, where logical thought and reasoning take place. This is why trauma-focused therapies tend to be more effective at “unsticking” trauma than traditional talk therapy.

Who’s an Ideal Fit for a Trauma-Focused Therapy Intensive?

Trauma-focused therapy intensives aren’t for everyone. They’re a great fit for people who:

      • Have strong coping tools but feel stuck and want a breakthrough

      • Prefer focused, goal-oriented therapy that respects your time

      • Are ready to process specific trauma or patterns without dragging it out over months

      • Have had prior therapy or feel comfortable with introspection

This approach might not be ideal for those who are new to therapy, need time to build trust with a therapist, or feel anxious about diving into deep work quickly.
